Vivekanand Seva Sangh, Singapore (also known as VSS) is a voluntary, non-profit, cultural organisation. It aims to promote and preserve eternal values of Universal Brotherhood, Peace and Harmony, which are practised as a way of life in Hindu Dharma. VSS conducts and undertakes constructive initiatives to build a cohesive and inclusive society, inculcate habits of self-disciple, self-confidence and spirit of selfless service in fellow citizens.
Inspired by ethical values as taught by Swami Vivekananda, our objectives are as follows:
- To bring about integration and harmony within the society
- To give primacy to the human and spiritual values over materialistic principles
- To create and promote better understanding and friendly relationship across races, nations & people
Mission:
Propagate and instil values of Hindu philosophy and teachings across all sections of society and work towards a thriving harmonious society. To cultivate, promote and foster an environment of understanding and love for the values promoted by Swami Vivekanand through various social activities viz. events seminars, workshops, community services and Yoga.
Vision:
To promote, preserve and practice Universal Brotherhood as per teachings of Hindu Moral Values.
Seva:
Swami Vivekanand enunciated a Mantra of Daridra Narayana Seva i.e. service to the downtrodden is service to god. At VSS, one of our core values is to serve the community with meaningful service projects and endeavours. We strongly believe that doing good to others out of compassion is good, but the service of all beings with selfless spirit must be the foundation and primary drive for Seva. With this inspiration, VSS has undertaken and successfully completed 87 seva projects in last 10 years.
Sanskar:
As per the teachings of Sanatan Dharma, each and every action should be virtuous in nature. One who does an action only after contemplating on all its aspects is a human. Every work that we do reflects our sanskars. There is a need to inculcate sanskars for good thoughts and right actions. Imparting good values (sanskars) is extremely important and imperative to the kids and youth who will be the pillars of our society in future. At VSS we are inspired by the guiding thoughts of Swami Vivekanand. Swamiji once said “Throw away all weakness. Tell your body that it is strong. Tell your mind that it is strong and have unbound faith and hope in yourself”. All VSS activities are holistically designed and mindfully executed to develop traits of teamwork, self discipline, self confidence and courage through regular parivar Milan at 9 places across Singapore, Camps for kids and youth (Bal Shibir and Yuva Shibir), Seminars and Workshops. These soft skills are backed by solid foundation of eternal moral values and teachings of Hindu Dharma.
Samanvay:
VSS is relentlessly working towards achieving greater coordination with all sections of the community by collaborating with different organisations on various platforms viz. Indian Traditional Games Festival, Yoga Day, Youth Day, Indian Festivals and Intellectual Seminars & Workshops.
The Vedic mantra from Rigveda illustrated below aptly signifies the importance and necessity of Samanvay i.e. coordination within society to achieve and realise common goal of strengthening and building a vibrant society.
ॐ संगच्छध्वं संवदध्वं , सं वो मनांसि जानताम् ।
समानो मन्त्र: समिति: समानी , समानं मन: सहचित्तमेषाम् ।
समानी व आकूति: समाना हृदयानि व: |
समानमस्तु वो मनो यथा व: सुसहासति ||
संगच्छध्वं संवदध्वं , सं वो मनांसि जानताम् ।
Walk together. Talk together. Let your minds apprehend together like the Devas concurred and accepted their portions of sacrifice. Common be their prayer. Common be their receipt, purpose, and desire. I repeat for you their common prayer. I offer you a common oblation.
